In October 2022, a three-vehicle crash on I-95 in Delray Beach at Atlantic Avenue caused a fuel tanker to spill and ignite. Five people were injured, but fortunately no fatalities. The burning fuel spread through the storm drain.
The FCPA followed up on this incident in order to learn through experience about the condition of the storm pipe system. According to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District 4 Operations Program Engineer Melanie Straub, this section of I-95 is under the management of an asset management contractor Louis Berger / WSP. Louis Berger conducted a closed-circuit television (CCTV) inspection of the steel pipe drainage system and confirmed no impacts. A drainage inlet and headwall were damaged by the impact and fire, and those were repaired by Louis Berger.
Fuel from a tanker incident Tuesday flowed through a storm drain on I-95, causing a secondary fire on the west side of the highway. Firefighters from DBFR, Boca Raton FR and @PBCFR used foam and water to attack the fires, which injured five people and closed I-95. pic.twitter.com/G89aUeuwER
