A recent New York Times article titled Here Are the Wildfire Risks to Homes Across the Lower 48 States reported a surprising statement on the wildfire risks to Florida homeowners: "Perhaps surprisingly, the state with the most properties facing at least a 1 percent wildfire risk is Florida, with almost 200,000 such parcels. (The next highest are Texas and California, with about 100,000 properties each.) Florida has thick vegetation that can burn easily, including palmetto and pine trees, when dried out by increasingly hot temperatures tied to climate change, according to Michele Steinberg, wildfire division director at the National Fire Protection Association."
The NY Times articles comes just days following the American Concrete Pipe Association (ACPA) webinar on Fire Resilient Infrastructure, which featured Marc Mattox from the Town of Paradise, California and also Ricardo Medina, an engineer with Simpson Gumpertz & Heger that is developing a new ASTM standard on designing for wildfire resilience of storm drainage infrastructure.
